The Only One Left

At seventeen, Lenora Hope allegedly murdered her family on the Maine coast in 1929, leaving a legacy that became a chilling schoolyard chant. While many assumed she was guilty, the police could never prove it, and Lenora herself has remained silent—until 1983, when home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at the decaying Hope’s End to care for the now mute, wheelchair-bound Lenora. Communicating only through an old typewriter, Lenora offers to tell her story, insisting, “It wasn’t me,” yet she is the only survivor. As Kit helps Lenora recount the events of that bloody night, unsettling truths begin to emerge, and when the circumstances surrounding her predecessor’s sudden departure come to light, Kit realizes the seemingly harmless woman in her care may be far more dangerous than anyone could have imagined.
