As daughters of the impoverished King of Montenegro, Militza and Stana are sent to St. Petersburg to marry into the Romanov court, securing alliances for their native country. Shunned by the aristocracy for their provincial ways and interest in the occult, the sisters ally with the lonely, outsider Tsarina Alexandra, who places her faith in their black magic to secure an heir. Through séances, rituals, and experiments with clairvoyants, holy fools, and charlatans, Militza and Stana rise in status and power—until they summon the enigmatic Rasputin, a spiritual shaman whose arrival irrevocably seals not only their fates but the destiny of Russia itself.
